7 Best Weekend Getaways From Chandigarh (All Under 6 Hours)
Seven places you can leave for after Friday work and be back in time for Monday's standup.
Chandigarh's geography is unfair to the rest of India. Within six hours of driving you can be in a pine forest, by a glacial river, or on a hilltop café. These seven weekend getaways are our most-requested self-drive routes.
1. Kasauli (1.5 hours)
A 65 km cruise, mostly highway. Perfect first-timer hill escape. Any hatchback handles it — try the Maruti Swift.
2. Morni Hills (1.5 hours)
Closer than Kasauli, less crowded, and easy from Panchkula. Take a Scorpio Classic for the last gravel kilometres.
3. Chail (2.5 hours)
World's highest cricket ground and quiet deodar forests. The Mahindra Thar Roxx makes for great photo ops.
4. Shimla (4 hours)
Classic. See our full itinerary linked at the end.
5. Tirthan Valley (6 hours)
Off the Manali highway, just before Aut tunnel. Quiet riverside camps. Take a Scorpio-N or Fortuner — the last 8 km gets narrow.
6. Jibhi (6 hours)
Tirthan's hipster cousin. Wooden cafés, trout streams. Same car recommendation.
7. Dharamshala / McLeodganj (5.5 hours)
Best in March–May and October. Tibetan food, monastery walks. A sedan like the Audi A4 makes the highway stretch feel like fifteen minutes.
