The 4x2 Thar is for people who want the Thar experience on tarmac — sector drives, Sukhna evenings, a Kasauli or Chail weekend — without paying for four-wheel drive they will not use.
It is a manual diesel and still has plenty of ground clearance for broken roads. What it does not have is the traction for snow or deep gravel; that is the 4x4's job.
